I went searching for some FFX fiction once. The fandom was large-ish (4,000+ stories) but none of it was really stellar.

I don't know if there is any good final fantasy fanfiction... Which game were you talking about? I think, on FFNet, that FF7 has the most fanfiction, with FF8 as a close second. FF12 is too new to have very many good examples of fanfiction. FF10 just doesn't seem to be that popular, despite being the only FF game to have a direct sequel. And, for you, I attempted to muddle through some of the fanfictions in hopes of finding a good one but, alas, all that met my eyes was slash, mary-sues, not even funny parodies, and stories that are so bad that they should be labeled parodies. Sorry, I give up. *headtable*

The problem of course being, that the stories in the actual games are so good, that to be anywhere as good or better, a person has to spend a great deal of time in the pre-develpoment stage of the fic, i.e. (a great deal of thought has to go into plotlines, the relationship between characters, events, backgrounds, and surrounding details). Not many people are willing to do that for a project they wont make any money off of. Not to mention the vast majority of fanfiction is, I'm very sorry to say, literary masturbation. In the end, it only pleases the author.
